Skelmorlie Aisle

Largs hidden gem

Largs evolved from the estates of North Cunninghame over which the Montgomeries of Skelmorlie became temporal lords in the seventeenth century.

Sir Robert Montgomerie built the Skelmorlie Aisle in the ancient kirk of Largs in 1636 as a burial site for himself and his wife, Margaret Douglas.

Above the burial vault there is an ornate Renaissance canopied tomb. The barrel vaulted ceiling was painted in 1638 by a Mr Stalker. Scenes on the painted panels illustrate the seasons, the signs of the zodiac and the cojoined coat of arms of the Montgomerie and Douglas families.

Today the monument is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland, and Largs Museum, which adjoins the old kirk graveyard, is the key holder.
