Largs museum is run by volunteers from the Largs & District Historical Society.
In 1967 Alex. Simpson acquired two weavers cottages in Manse Court to house his growing collection of photographs and local artefacts. In 1975 the adjoining Kirkgate House was incorporated Mr Simpson gifted his cottages and personal collection to the museum. Its collections include photography and maps of the area, old kirkyard records, local society records and memorabilia.
For those researching local/family history the museum’s archives include:
- microfilm of Largs & Millport Weekly News from 1877.
- Old Parish Church burial records.
- memorial inscriptions from the adjacent kirkyard and Haylie Brae cemetery.
- An extensive catalogue of old photographs.
- World War II information.
It acts as the Keyholder, on behalf of Historical Environment Scotland, for the Skelmorlie Aisle.
