During the war, Barrfields Pavilion performed a radically different purpose. It was used as a store and workshop and for the se rvicing of Catalina Flying Boats which were built in America.
A ramp had to be constructed opposite the Barrfields building for the flying boats to be hauled from the sea. That ramp now serves the R.N.L.I. lifeboat station.
Few of today’s prom walkers are likely to be unaware of its original use.
