A peel tower built in the early 1200s and extended in the 1500s, the castle has been home to the Hunter family until 1804 when they moved to Hunterston House, 200 yards away.
The castle is open to the public by appointment. The house is not.
The cellar vault has been perfectly preserved and houses the famous Wallace Oak, part of the original tree to which William Wallace was chained to in 1305 prior to being dragged to London where he was hung, drawn and quartered.

The 16th century New Hall houses an excellent facsimile copy of one of the original charters from the King to Clan Hunter granting the lands of Ameil.
There is also a brilliant replica of the Hunterston Brooch, a jewelled brooch made on the west coast of Scotland circa 700AD – the original is in the National Museum of Scotland.
