This stylised modern sculpture of a Viking longboat, located in front of Caledonian MacBrayne ferry terminal/ticket office at the pierhead, was unveiled by Councillor Stewart Dewar, Convenor of Cunninghame District Council on Friday 20 August 1993.
Michel de Bruin spent four months creating the Viking ship from black pasture stone from the borders, assisted by blacksmith Alison Doyle.
The sculpture completed the upgrading of the prom from the pierhead to, what at the time was, the Green Shutters restaurant.
Funding for the prom upgrading project was provided by CDC (Cunninghame District Council), Enterprise Ayrshire, Largs Common Good Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.
