A small fleet of 6 fishing boats operate from Largs harbour on a daily basis.
They set sail in the wee small hours and return around 4 – 5 p.m. to land their catch, which is chiefly live Scottish langoustine. 90% of what is caught is sold to outlets across France. A further 10% goes to white linen restaurants and the remainder is sold to local fish restaurants and takeaways.
Ian Wightman , skipper of the Eilidh Anne (see photo) has been a commercial fisherman for more than 40 forty years and is passionately involved in several projects promoting the development of sustainable practices used in the Scottish langoustine industry.
He is on the advisory board of sntechuk helping them develop their Pisces LED lights and Catch Cam – a camera which allows fishermen to see their gear at work and gives an understanding on how to improve catches and reduce unwanted bycatch.
